Alaska Airlines Bedding
A premium bedding collection translating Filson’s heritage of craftsmanship into Alaska Airlines’ onboard experience.
Context
As Design Lead at WESSCO International, I led the product development of Alaska Airlines’ new bedding collection in collaboration with Filson. The project launched in April 2026 through a partnership between Alaska Airlines, Filson, Formia, and WESSCO.
The program was developed on an accelerated timeline following Alaska Airlines’ acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines. As Hawaiian’s Boeing 787 Dreamliners were repainted and introduced into Alaska’s fleet, the airline required a complete bedding collection for the newly outfitted premium cabins ahead of the aircraft launch.
Another airline supplier, Formia, introduced the Filson partnership to Alaska Airlines. Alaska then engaged WESSCO to develop and manufacture the bedding collection, translating the approved creative direction into a production-ready product system for commercial airline service.
The collection spans both Business Class and Economy, creating a cohesive premium sleep experience across the cabin while meeting the compressed development schedule.
Challenge
The challenge was translating Filson’s heritage of craftsmanship into airline-ready products while preserving the approved creative direction.
Every product needed to balance comfort, durability, manufacturability, and operational performance while maintaining a consistent design language across multiple bedding categories. The accelerated development schedule added further complexity, requiring rapid sampling, refinement, and production without compromising quality.
Our Approach
Translating the Approved Direction
Working from the approved creative direction, I led the development of the collection into a manufacturable bedding system. This included refining materials, construction, finishes, and production details while preserving the intended aesthetic throughout the development process.
Developing the Bedding Collection
The collection includes a duvet, mattress pad, main pillow, and lumbar pillow for Business Class, alongside a blanket and non-woven pillow for Economy. Each product was developed to create a consistent passenger experience while responding to the operational requirements of different cabin classes.
Refining Materials and Construction
The bedding was developed using recycled polyester fabrics featuring a subtle tonal plaid inspired by Filson’s heritage. Fabric construction, quilting, stitching, and finishes were refined through multiple development rounds to balance comfort, durability, and production quality.
Sampling and Production
Working closely with WESSCO’s sourcing teams and manufacturing partners, I led multiple rounds of sampling to refine textile construction, colour accuracy, quilting, and overall product quality before launch, ensuring the collection remained on schedule for aircraft entry into service.
