A premium onboard textile collection inspired by Iceland’s landscapes, translating topographic forms into a unified visual language across the cabin.

The Icelandair bedding collection styled in a room set - a grey woven blanket over a white ladder, stacked navy-bordered pillows and a topographic duvet on a bench, and a printed cushion on the floor.

Context

As Design Lead at WESSCO International, I led the design and development of Icelandair’s new onboard textile collection, launched in 2025.

Working closely with Icelandair’s brand and product teams, I developed a collection inspired by the bird’s-eye view of Iceland’s mountains, rivers, glaciers, and coastlines. The objective was to create a distinctive visual identity that connected multiple onboard products through a single design language while remaining true to Icelandair’s Scandinavian aesthetic.

Challenge

Icelandair wanted to refresh its bedding collection with designs that reflected Iceland’s natural landscape while maintaining the simplicity and restraint of the airline’s brand.

The challenge was creating patterns that felt expressive without becoming decorative, while ensuring they translated consistently across multiple textile applications, materials, and manufacturing techniques.

Our Approach

Developing a Unified Pattern Language

The collection was built around abstract topographic linework inspired by Iceland’s landscapes. Rather than illustrating individual landmarks, the patterns capture the movement and flow of the country’s natural terrain through continuous linework.

Designing Across the Cabin

The visual language was applied across blankets, duvets, pillows, headrests, and onboard food packaging. Pattern scale, density, and colour were adjusted for each product while maintaining a cohesive identity throughout the passenger experience.

Balancing Design and Performance

Working with Icelandair’s brand and product teams, I refined colour, texture, material selection, and textile finishes to ensure the collection delivered both visual consistency and long-term performance under airline operating conditions.

Sampling and Production

Multiple rounds of sampling were used to refine print quality, weave construction, colour accuracy, and material performance before production.

The Work

Creative direction and textile design for Icelandair’s onboard bedding collection.

Development of an original topographic pattern system inspired by Iceland’s natural landscapes.

Design of blankets, duvets, pillows, headrests, and supporting onboard graphics.

Colour, material, and finish development across the collection.

Pattern scaling and refinement for multiple textile applications.

Technical development, sampling, and production refinement.

Collaboration with Icelandair’s brand and product teams throughout development.

Impact

  • One Language, Many Touchpoints

The collection introduced a distinctive visual identity across Icelandair’s onboard soft goods, connecting multiple passenger touchpoints through a single pattern language inspired by Iceland’s landscape.

  • Textile as Brand

The project demonstrated how textile design can reinforce an airline’s brand while improving the overall passenger experience through thoughtful colour, pattern, and material selection.

  • Award-Winning Design

The collection was recognised with two Best Business Class Bedding awards at the 2025 World Travel Catering & Onboard Services Expo (WTCE).
