Hawaiian Airlines Bedding Collection
A premium onboard bedding collection translating Noho Home’s design language into a cohesive textile experience inspired by Hawaiʻi.
Context
As Design Lead at WESSCO International, I led the design development of Hawaiian Airlines’ new bedding and soft goods collection in collaboration with Noho Home, a Hawaiʻi-based lifestyle brand known for celebrating Hawaiian culture through contemporary design.
The collection launched in 2023 and included quilts, duvets, pillows, and headrest covers across multiple cabins. My role was to translate Noho Home’s residential textile designs into aviation products that balanced visual expression, passenger comfort, and long-term durability.
Challenge
The collection needed to capture Hawaiʻi’s culture and natural beauty while remaining practical for commercial airline service.
The challenge was adapting Noho Home’s residential design language for woven and printed aviation textiles, ensuring each product maintained the integrity of the original patterns while meeting airline performance and manufacturing requirements.
Our Approach
Translating the Brand
Working closely with Noho Home and Hawaiian Airlines, I adapted the brand’s residential patterns into a coordinated collection of onboard textiles suitable for aviation use. The collection features three signature motifs:
- Kilo Hōkū - inspired by the Hawaiian tradition of stargazing.
- Lele - representing flight and movement.
- ʻŌlali - symbolising gliding and flow.
Creating a Cohesive Collection
Each pattern was refined for blankets, duvets, pillows, and headrest covers through adjustments to scale, colour, and layout. The result was a consistent visual language that connected the entire bedding collection.
Balancing Design and Performance
The collection was developed using recycled fibres to support Hawaiian Airlines’ sustainability objectives. Pattern layouts, textile construction, and finishes were refined to balance comfort, durability, and production quality.
Sampling and Production
Working with WESSCO’s sourcing teams, textile manufacturers, Hawaiian Airlines, and Noho Home, I oversaw multiple rounds of sampling to refine colour accuracy, fabric construction, print quality, and manufacturing consistency before production.
